Following the massive success of Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024), Disney quickly greenlit a fifth installment in the franchise that has captivated a new generation of fans. Descendants 5 (officially titled Descendants: Wicked Wonderland) picks up the consequences of Red and Chloe’s time-traveling adventure and introduces a host of new villainous offspring .

Release Date & Production

The film is scheduled to premiere in Summer 2026 on Disney Channel and Disney+ . A teaser trailer was released in February 2026, giving fans their first glimpse of the chaos awaiting Wonderland .

Production began in March 2025 in Vancouver, Canada, with Kimmy Gatewood directing . The script was written by co-executive producer Tamara Chestna alongside Dan Frey and Ru Sommer, who also wrote The Rise of Red . Emmy-winning choreographer Emilio Dosal has come on board for the fifth film .

The Story: Consequences of Time Travel

The film picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of The Rise of Red. Red (Kylie Cantrall) and Chloe (Malia Baker) successfully traveled back in time to prevent the Queen of Hearts from becoming a cold, ruthless villain. When they returned to the present, they found a changed world—the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) was now a loving, joyful ruler .

But as Uma warned at the end of the fourth film: “Getting what you want can be dangerous… especially when you mess with the fabric of time” .

The official synopsis reads: “Set primarily in present-day Wonderland, the sequel delves into the warning at the end of the previous movie: ‘There are consequences when you alter the fabric of time’” .

Red and Chloe decide to hide their magical time-traveling pocket watch inside the Royal Vault, believing it will be safe. However, Maddox Hatter (Leonardo Nam), the son of the Mad Hatter, has transformed into a ruthless villain determined to find the watch and use it to “bend time and the fate of Wonderland to his will” .

The film also introduces the Kingdom Cup Games, a competition hosted in Wonderland that serves as the backdrop for much of the action .
